I am currently based in Vancouver, completing my Bachelor of Visual Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Originally from Quesnel, British Columbia, my work is heavily influenced by the geography of the Cariboo Region where I grew up. I have always felt a pull towards abstract patterns and organic forms, this combined with my love for the colour blue created a natural evolution in my practice that led me to taking inspiration from lakes and rivers.
What started as an artistic exploration into topographical maps has morphed into an ever expanding series of lakes and islands in and around B.C and Canada. Working with acrylic paint on stretched canvas, I create gradient colour palettes that are unique to each painting and often have significance related to the location. I love being able to give people a physical representation of a place that has great meaning to them.
The natural forms of lakes and rivers and the consequences of flooding and erosion inform another aspect of my practice that is more involved with mixed media work. Using acrylic medium and thinly woven fabrics, I manipulate the materials to reflect geographical forms that have been impacted by water erosion. This results in an organically shaped abstract wall sculpture that is flexible and can be oriented many ways. I hope to continue to push the limitations of these materials while allowing the flowing nature of the mediums to influence the end results.
While being continually inspired by the province I live in I also acknowledge that I am currently creating on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations.
